Update on Implementation of 2006 IPC Concluding Document

Parliaments of Burkina Faso and Malawi almost simultaneously proceeded immediately after the conference in Rome to form a caucus on Human Rights and Religious Freedom. We expect the establishment of at least 12 parliamentary working groups/caucuses by the next session of the iPC in November 2007.

The Parliament of Kenya, which sent a delegation to the conference and which was headed by the Speaker of the Parliament, took the further step to address the importance of the issues of religious freedom and human rights and initiated the Committee on Human Rights and Religious Freedom within teh Parliament.

Following the developments in both Parliaments, the President of the Institute on Religion and Public Policy has been invited to address the opening of the 2007 Session of Parliament of Burkina Faso and to inaugurate the Committee on Human Rights and Religious Freedom at the Parliament of Kenya.

Based on the vigorous correspondence with the attending parliamentarian delegations, there are strong indications of other parliaments following the lead set up by the Parliaments of Burkina Faso and Parliament of Kenya.
